Accor Hotels was opening a boutique hotel along the water in Perth called Wonil Hotel, and the brief was to create the brand. Being on Indigenous land, we wanted to honour and respect the local culture as much as possible. I was inspired by the buds of the Wonil tree, Agonis flexuosa, which grow in an alternating pattern along the branches, and turned them into a simple, graphic form that resembles a W for Wonil, which means peppermint tree in the Wadjuk Noongar language. Colours, gradients, and shadow play were drawn from the stunning sunsets over the Indian Ocean and the Western Australian fauna. The shadows were used to give the feeling of being shaded by a peppermint tree under the Australian sun. The identity was rolled out across all hotel touchpoints, including wayfinding, door signage, stationery, letterheads, envelopes, business cards, a micro-site, and a short brand guideline to make it easy for the team to use.
